Editorial Policy

The SIAM Journal on Optimization contains research articles on the theory and practice of optimization. The areas addressed include linear and quadratic programming, convex programming, nonlinear programming, complementarity problems, stochastic optimization, combinatorial optimization, integer programming, and convex, nonsmooth and variational analysis. Contributions may emphasize optimization theory, algorithms, software, computational practice, applications, or the links between these subjects.

Articles for the SIAM Journal on Optimization must be written in clear and idiomatic English and must be accessible and of interest to a large part of the optimization community. They must contain substantially new results and relate them to the extant literature in a scholarly fashion.

Brevity is encouraged, with a suggested maximum length of 25 pages. Longer papers are published only in exceptional cases. In such cases, the editor and referees must be convinced that the length of the paper is both required by the subject matter and justified by the paper's quality.

Submission of a manuscript to a SIAM journal is representation by the author that the manuscript has not been published or submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Papers that have been accepted previously for conference proceedings may be considered if:

  1. they contain significant material over and above the accepted conference version and any supplements to that version; and
  2. publication of a second version in the SIAM Journal on Optimization is warranted by the paper's reaching a higher standard than accepted papers that have not been preceded by conference versions.

Authors must clearly indicate the fact that the paper has been accepted previously for a conference proceedings in both their cover letter and a footnote on the first page of the paper and must submit the previously accepted version (with supplements) along with their submission to this journal.

If a paper has appeared previously in another (nonconference) venue, in any form, or was previously submitted to this journal in another form, authors must clearly indicate this fact in both their cover letter and a footnote on the first page of the paper.
