Report on Recent Issues in Mathematical Research in Materials Science

The fast growing field of materials science offers new opportunities to applied mathematicians. The rational development of new materials depends on new understanding of how this microstructure affects the macroscopic properties. A recent study conducted by NRC in "Mathematical Research in Materials Science" has asked over one hundred mathematicians working on materials science and materials scientists working with mathematical models to describe their ongoing research and future opportunities. The report, based on the responses received, includes a new methodological approach to the subject. In this talk I shall describe the report and give examples of challenging areas of research.
