The W. T. and Idalia Reid Prize

The W. T. and Idalia Reid Prize in Mathematics is awarded for research in, or other contributions to, the broadly defined areas of differential equations and control theory. Each prize may be given either for a single notable achievement or for a collection of such achievements.

The 1994 recipient is Wendell H. Fleming, Brown University.

Chair: John A. Burns, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Some Trends in Stochastic Control Theory

This lecture will be rather nontechnical in nature. A brief retrospective of stochastic control as it developed since the 1960's will be given. Some areas of current research activity will be mentioned, including risk sensitive control theory which provides a link between deterministic (robust control) and stochastic approaches to disturbances in control systems. Finally, some comments will be made about what may lie ahead, with reference to the 1988 report published by SIAM, Future Directions in Control Theory: A Mathematical Perspective.

Wendell H. Fleming, Division of Applied Mathematics, Brown University

Wendell H. Fleming is University Professor of applied mathematics and mathematics, and Chairman of the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. Prior to joining the faculty at Brown, he held positions at Purdue University and the Rand Corporation.

His honors include the Steele Prize from the American Mathematical Society and an honorary degree from Purdue University. He was the Fermi Lecturer at the Scuola Normale Superiore Pisa, and plenary speaker at the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control. He has published three books and is author or co-author of many research articles on calculus of variations, geometric measure theory and control theory.

Dr. Fleming received his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin.
