Preconditioning and Iterative Methods for Problems Arising in Fluid Flow

There has been much work on preconditioning for self-adjoint and positive definite problems such as arise from discretisation of the Laplacian and its variants in the last 20 years. More recently there have been important advances in the more difficult area of preconditioning for non-symmetric and indefinite problems: such problems pervade computational fluid dynamics.

This minisymposium will focus on describing some of the theoretical advances that have been made in understanding the behaviour of various preconditioned iterative strategies for different but related problems describing fluid flow.

To inform researchers and practitioners in CFD and Scientific Computing more generally of recent theoretical advances in preconditioning methodology which can help guide the design and use of preconditioned iterative solution methods for large scale applications.
