Experiences in Teaching Mathematical Modeling

In the effort to add vitality to the traditional mathematics curriculum, several very innovative mathematical modeling courses have been taught at various institutions. Some of the courses are case-study oriented, whereas others involve projects. In most cases, team work and presentation skills are stressed. Moreover, the projects often involve experimental activities or information gathering activities. The students in these classes participate in the process of taking a nontechnical description of the problem into a mathematical formulation, and apply techniques to solve the problem. The purpose of this minisymposium is to disseminate these new ideas in teaching mathematical modeling, and to provide resources for those contemplating similar activities. The speakers will give first hand experience in such courses.
