Modeling the Kinetics of Viral Infections

Alan S. Perelson, Los Alamos National Laboratory

Virus infection is public health problem of enormous magnitude, with over 40 million people infected with HIV and 300 million infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). Influenza can infect as many as 20% of the world’s population each year. I will briefly review the field of viral dynamics, emphasizing how mathematics how yielded insights into how these viruses behave within the body, and mathematical analysis helped change the way virus infections are treated. I will provide examples and models of HIV infection, hepatitis C virus and influenza infection. The mathematics currently used involves odes, pdes and delay equations. Problems of control of infection and optimization of treatment
by drugs or better designed vaccines will be mentioned.
