SIAM Northeast Regional
Mathematics in Industry Workshop

Monday-Wednesday, May 18-20, 1998
Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics
Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA

Have you wondered about sharing with your students the experience of solving mathematical problems in business, industry, and government? Learning more about the practice of mathematics outside of academia? Building better relations with non-academic organizations in your area?

To address issues like these, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) with the support of the National Science Foundation is sponsoring a series of regional meetings focused on Mathematics in Industry. The first of these is the SIAM Northeast Regional Mathematics in Industry Workshop Monday-Wednesday, May 18-20, 1998 Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA. The second is the SIAM Midwest Regional Mathematics in Industry Workshop. Information can be found at http://www.siam.org/meetings/mi98west/.

The first two days will include talks from industrial mathematicians about their mathematical problems, descriptions of a wide variety of university-industrial programs for undergraduate and graduate students, panel discussions of industrial hiring practices and expectations, industrial-academic partners describing their working relationships, and presentations of industry-related work by students and faculty. The third day will be a tour and overview of mathematical work at United Technologies in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Faculty, students, and nonacademic mathematicians are encouraged to participate as attendees or as contributors (either describing current programs and industrial partnerships or presenting papers arising from industrial collaborations). A limited amount of travel support is available on an as needed basis.

A preliminary program, on-line registration form, and instructions for applying for travel support is available at http://www.wpi.edu/~cims/siamworkshop.html.

The deadline for submission of extended contributed abstracts to WPI is March 18, 1998. The deadline for receipt of applications for support is April 1, 1998. Registration deadline is April 17, 1998.

We look forward to your participation!
