Wavelets have turned out to be excellent tools to use within a nonlinear approximation framework, giving provably optimal or near-optimal results in a variety of different problem situations, some of them connected to the compression and/or sparse representation of images and large data sets. The talk will start with a review of wavelets and of nonlinear aproximation, and then proceed to discsuss applications (and limitations).
