Congress Debates Future of Computer Science Research

The U.S. House of Representatives has scheduled hearings for May 12, 2005 on the Future of Computer Science Research in the U.S. Much of the focus of the hearings is on the Defense Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the reported shift away from basic research in overall federal support for computer science.

Witnesses include John Marburger, the President's science advisory (Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, or OSTP), Anthony Tether, Director of DARPA, William Wulf, President of the National Academy of Engineering, and Tom Leighton, applied mathematician at MIT as well as Chief Scientist and Founder of Akamai and member of the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC).

The Computing Research Association (CRA), of which SIAM is a member, reports on Congressional activities on computer science and IT research.

The Thursday May 12 hearing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Eastern time and can be heard live on the web.
