National Medal of Science Awarded to Carl de Boor

President Bush awarded prominent mathematician Carl de Boor the 2003 National Medal of Science during a White House ceremony on March 14, 2005. The President's appointed committee of scientists at the National Science Foundation awards the National Medal of Science each year.
Carl de Boor specializes in numerical analysis and is recognized for his innovative work in spline functions, which has practical applications in aircraft and automotive construction and design.
Born in East Germany, Dr. de Boor received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1966 and joined the University of Wisconsin, Madison faculty in 1972, where he remains today. He is a member of various organizations, including the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the American Mathematical Society.
