May 1, 2007
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters announced in March that Srinivasa S.R. Varadhan of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, is the 2007 recipient of the Abel Prize.
The prize recognizes Varadhan "for fundamental contributions to probability theory and in particular for creating a unified theory of large deviations."
His Majesty King Harald will present the prize (6,000,000 Norwegian kroner, US$920,000) during ceremonies in Oslo at the end of May. Meanwhile, Daniel Stroock of MIT offers a concise view of his sometime collaborator's contributions over a distinguished career. See S.R.S. Varadhan. Photo by Cheryl Sylivant.
