Argentinean Section of SIAM Co-sponsors International Conference on Applied, Computational, and Industrial Mathematics

The First Congress on Applied, Computational and Industrial Mathematics, organized by the recently established Argentinean Section of SIAM, was held in the charming, historic city of C�rdoba, October 2�5, 2007. The School of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of the Universidad Nacional de C�rdoba hosted the congress; Terry Herd-man of Virginia Tech served as the SIAM representative. The congress was held jointly with the XVI Congress on Numerical Methods and Their Applications, which was organized by the Argentinean Association for Computational Mechanics.
The two congresses received support from SIAM, CONICET, SECyT and the Secretary of Water Resources of Argentina, SIMULIA, Universidad Tecnol�gica Nacional of Argentina, Thomson, ROFEX, Universidad Austral, Universidad Nacional del Litoral, and Uni�n Matem�tica Argentina.
Many of the more than 350 participants in the two congresses hailed from Argentina and neighboring countries like Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay, but some had come from more distant lands, including Colombia, Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, the United States, and Venezuela.
Mathematicians, engineers, physicists, economists, biologists, and other professionals participated in these truly interdisciplinary congresses. In addition to enjoying the sights, sounds, food, and convivial people of C�rdoba, participants were treated to a congress banquet that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The technical program was centered on eight plenary lectures; the speakers were John Burns (Virginia Tech), Miguel Cerrolaza (Universidad Central de Venezuela), Eugene Cliff (Virginia Tech), Max Gunzburger (Florida State University), Jos� M. Longo (the German Aerospace Center, DLR), Jos� M. Mart�nez (UNICAMP, Brazil), Wolfgang Rodi (University of Karlsruhe), and Juan Sanmart�n (Universidad Polit�cnica de Madrid).
In addition, the program included eight short courses and twenty-one sessions; results of a student paper competition were announced, and a special poster session was devoted to undergraduate student papers. The authors of three best undergraduate poster presentations received special prizes consisting of money, books, and short fellowships.
The papers presented at both congresses have been collected and issued as Volume XXVI of the AMCA Series "Mec�nica Computacional," which is available at http://www.cimec.org.ar/ojs/inex.php/mc/issue/archive. Sergio Elaskar, Elvio Pilotta, and German Torres edited the proceedings.
The Argentinean Section of SIAM held its annual meeting during the congress and, with great success, actively recruited many new members.---Max Gunzburger and Ruben Spies.
