Christopher I. Byrnes (right), the Edward H. and Florence G. Skinner Professor of Systems Science and Mathematics and dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis, is the 2005 recipient of the W.T. and Idalia Reid Prize in Mathematics. Shown here with SIAM president Martin Golubitsky at the awards luncheon at the 2005 SIAM Annual Meeting, Byrnes was cited "for his fundamental contributions in the areas of pole-placement by output feedback, output regulation for nonlinear systems, and spectral estimation and robust control."
Byrnes's research interests include feedback design in automatic control, nonlinear dynamics and control, and estimation and filtering; his work has been applied in aerospace science, electrical power systems, signal processing, and speech synthesis, among other fields.
The Reid Prize, endowed by Idalia Reid in memory of her husband, has been awarded by SIAM since 1993 to recognize outstanding work in the broadly defined areas of differential equations and control theory. The prize, which is given annually, can recognize either a single notable achievement or a collection of such achievements.
