Results of Fall 2004 SIAM Election

The usually unflappable Jim Crowley (center) was the surprised guest of honor at a dinner held in Philadelphia during the December meeting of the SIAM Board of Trustees. The occasion: completion of his first decade as executive director of SIAM.
Three new members were elected to the SIAM Board of Trustees in the fall 2004 SIAM election. John Lewis (Cray Inc.), Jerrold Marsden (California Institute of Technology), and Stephen Wright (University of Wisconsin-Madison) were all elected to first terms on the board that began January 1, 2005. They join continuing board members Marsha Berger (Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University), Tony Chan (University of California, Los Angeles), Iain Duff (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory), Suzanne Lenhart (University of Tennessee), Michael Overton (Courant), Lloyd (Nick) Trefethen (Oxford University), Anna Tsao (AlgoTek Inc.), Margaret Wright (Courant), SIAM president Martin Golubitsky (University of Houston) and SIAM treasurer Samuel Gubins (Annual Reviews Inc.). Overton, who chaired the board in 2004, was re-elected to an additional one-year term in December.
Elected as members-at-large of the SIAM Council were Lisa Fauci (Tulane University), C.T. (Tim) Kelley (North Carolina State University), and Randall LeVeque (University of Washington), all for second terms, and Mary Pugh (University of Toronto), who was elected to a first term.
Continuing council members are Douglas Arnold (Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications, University of Minnesota), Carlos Castillo-Chavez (Arizona State University), Lori Freitag Diachin (Sandia National Laboratories), Anne Greenbaum (University of Washington), Michael Heath (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), David Keyes (Columbia University), Henk van der Vorst (Utrecht University), and Andrew Wathen (Oxford), along with SIAM secretary Paul Boggs (Sandia), SIAM vice president for education William Briggs (University of Colorado, Denver), SIAM vice president at large Joseph Flaherty (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), Golubitsky, Gubins, SIAM past president James (Mac) Hyman (Los Alamos National Laboratory), SIAM vice president for programs Ilse Ipsen (NC State), SIAM vice president for industry Kirk Jordan (IBM Corporation), SIAM vice president for publications Gregory Kriegsmann (New Jersey Institute of Technology), and Overton. (All elected and appointed SIAM officers serve as ex officio members of the council.)
Martin Golubitsky began a two-year term as SIAM president on January 1, succeeding Mac Hyman, who began a one-year term as past president. SIAM thanks him and all who served in elected or appointed positions in 2004, especially outgoing board members Margaret Cheney (RPI), Eric Grosse (Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies), and Cleve Moler (The MathWorks Inc.)---who completed the maximum allowable three three-year terms---and council member William Symes (Rice University).
The fall election was the first Web-based election for SIAM. Valid ballots were received from a total of 1869 members, or 19.2% of the eligible voters; this was a significant increase over recent years (all the more impressive in that a president was not being elected). SIAM mailed 1337 paper ballots; only 141 of the 1869 voting members used paper ballots (130 of the 141 were from U.S. voters).
A few more statistics: 75.9% of all eligible voters reside in North
America; 74.6% of the votes cast were from residents of North America.
