Off to a Good Start: Drexel Inaugurates SIAM Student Chapter

November 26, 2004

A relaxed but lively ambiance (and a nice selection of reading material) helped make the new chapter's initial meeting a success.

Drexel University inaugurated its SIAM Student Chapter on October 12 with a day-long event featuring presentations by three PhD students and a welcome from new mathematics department chair (as of January 1, 2005) Hugo Woerdeman. On hand to help get the new chapter off to a good start was former SIAM president Gilbert Strang, who discussed the generation of triangular meshes in MATLAB (work done with MIT grad student Per-Olof Persson; see SIAM Review, June 2004). The three student speakers were Amal Aafif of the math department and Image Science Lab ("Panoramic Image Processing Using Non-Commutative Harmonic Analysis"), Trip Denton of the computer science department and Applied Algorithms Lab ("Canonical Sets"), and Emek Kose, also from mathematics and the Image Science Lab ("Achieving Wide Field of View Using Folded Catadioptric Sensors").
