Jacques-Louis Lions, 1928-2001

As this issue went to press, SIAM News learned of the death of Jacques-Louis Lions, on May 17 in Paris.

A prolific researcher in a wide range of areas, Jacques-Louis Lions is often described as the father of applied mathematics in France. He had held a chair at the Coll�ge de France since 1973, becoming a professor emeritus, in 1998, on his retirement.

SIAM accorded him two of its highest honors, The John von Neumann Lecture (in 1986) and the W.T. and Idalia Reid Prize in Mathematics (in 1998). The latter, which recognizes outstanding work in control or differential equations, found the ideal recipient in Lions, who would have been eminently qualified in either area.
