SIAM funds student chapter activities

SIAM awarded $19,896 to 40 students chapters for activities taking place on local campuses during the 2007-2008 academic year. Planned activities include visiting lecturers, research presentations by undergraduate and graduates students as well as faculty, student paper competitions, field trips to local industry, contests, and social events including the showing of math related movies. Following are some examples of activities being sponsored by SIAM chapters this year.
Drexel University is planning a Reimann Day on May14, 2008 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the publishing of the Reimann hypotheses.
The Colorado chapters of SIAM at Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Denver are planning their 4th Front Range Student Conference on March 1, 2008.
The chapters at Auburn, Clemson, Emory, and South Carolina at Columbia recently held the 2nd annual ACES workshop at Auburn University to provide a forum for the presentation of individual student research as well as the exchange of ideas for possible future collaborations between the chapters.
The METU chapter in Turkey plans to organize weekly seminars, offer a series of invited lecturers, and offer a workshop titled "Careers in Mathematics in Turkey."
NCSU chapter plans on offering industry talks by people from Boeing and MIT Lincoln Labs. The chapter sells SIAM travel mugs to raise money for their activities.
Chapters from the University of Texas, Texas Tech, and Rice will be coordinating their 2nd annual TAMMS conference, the Texas Applied Mathematics Meeting for Students.
Stanford Chapter will be hosting its annual SCREAM � the Symposium for Research And Mathematics.
The SUNY New Paltz chapter plans to invite John Hamilton from Kodak Research Labs to present his VLP lecture What does an Industrial Mathematician Do?
The Tufts Chapter is holding a special luncheon with Wiener lecturer Margaret Wright, Chair of the Computer Science Department at NYU.
University of Arizona chapter is hosting the Tucson Kids Club's Math Day.
The UCDavis Chapter is planning Career Night to provide speakers from industry and a Student Research Conference to provide the opportunity for students to offer research on applied math topics.
The UCLA chapter is providing a Graduate Experience Panel to give undergraduate students a chance to ask a panel of graduate students questions about their graduate school experience.
The chapter of the University of Colorado at Boulder presented an episode of Numb3rs, a mathematically-themed crime drama.
The University of Illinois at Chicago sponsored a field trip to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
As part of the worldwide celebration of the life and memory of Gene Golub, the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign Chapter is helping to organize a symposium in his honor at UIUC February 29 through March 1, 2008.
