Global Climate Modeling

8:30 AM-9:15 AM
Room: Rio Mar 5
Chair: Richard A. Tapia, Rice University, USA

Since the mid-1960s, climate modeling has grown substantially from very simple atmospheric models to complex simulation tools of the entire climate system including the atmosphere, land/vegetation, ocean, hydrological, and sea ice components. Present day models are increasingly being used to give quantitative information on societal issues such as global warming. The speaker will discuss the future of climate modeling developments using advanced numerical methods. Also included will be a discussion of how the DOE supported Parallel Climate Model (PCM) performs on the new parallel computer architectures. Atmosphere, ocean and sea ice animations will be shown.
