Nonlinear Waves and Embedded Solitons

4:00 PM-6:00 PM
Rio Mar 4

Nonlinear waves is a traditional and important branch of applied mathematics. Discoveries such as solitons has lead to great innovations in optical fiber communication technology and deep understanding of water wave dynamics. In this minisymposium, the speakers will focus on new advances in nonlinear waves, including dispersion-managed solitons and embedded solitons. Dispersion-managed solitons are optical pulses in fibers with alternating dispersion. They are showing great potential as the superior transmission format in fiber communications. Embedded solitons are solitary waves embedded inside the continuous spectrum of the linearized system. They are new types of solitary waves with unique dynamical behaviors. The speakers will also present new results on water wave evolution modeled by the generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation.
