Why Is It So Hard to Program Parallel Computers?

After 20 years of research and 10 years of serious commercial development, parallel computing still represents only a tiny fraction of the computing industry. Why? The speaker will survey the state of the software available today for parallel computing, and try to identify the reasons why it is so difficult to develop viable, general purpose, technical computing environments for parallel machines.
