This minisymposium will be devoted to two modern extensions of the classical theory of orthogonal systems of special functions in one real variable. The first extension is wavelets. Three presentations on the theory, construction and application of orthogonal wavelets are planned. The second extension is multivariate orthogonal polynomials that generalize Jacobi polynomials. Two presentations on construction and properties of these polynomials are planned.
Both extensions play an important role in the approximation of functions and representation of data. Wavelets, in particular, have applications in signal processing, medicine and biology.
The speakers will provide an introduction, give examples of the applications, discuss construction, and indicate some directions of current research.
