About the Workshop...
A variety of industries are engaged in research on environmental problems, including oil and gas, mining, chemicals, agriculture, and semiconductors. Many of the kinds of problems and issues faced by industry are common to those in the government complex, and to DOE in particular.
Our goal is to look for the commonalities underlying these environmental problems and to engage the applied mathematics community in their formulation, modeling and analysis. We are focusing on bioremediation because it is one of the most promising in situ methods for clean-up, but involves complex interactions that are not well-understood.
Topics to be addressed include
- mechanics of multicomponent reactive flow through porous and fractured media
- specific biological agents and processes available for bioremediation, mixed versus pure bacterial populations (microbial soil ecology)
- soil heterogeneity and issues of scale-up in implementation
- case studies of implementation at DOE sites and at industrial sites
- identification of research needs
Technical challenges that would be addressed include
- dealing with multiple time scales
- validating models
- developing accurate and efficient numerical algorithms for
- coupled processes
- optimization
- role of uncertainty, heterogeneity, and related issues.
