A Message from the Conference Chair...

Dear Colleagues:

Welcome to Philadelphia for the Second SIAM Conference on Mathematical Aspects of Materials Science.

This is a highly interdisciplinary meeting -- drawing over 200 scientists with a broad range of backgrounds, all working on mathematical and computational aspects of materials science. The themes include some topics which have been popular within the SIAM community -- such as Composite Materials, Martensitic Transformation, Phase Boundary Dynamics, and Superconductivity. They also include some topics which have been less popular, but which seem ripe for greater attention -- such as Granular Materials, Magnetic Materials, Synthesis and Processing, and Thin Films.

The response to our Call for Papers was extraordinary. As a result the program is fairly dense. Besides the 9 Invited Presentations we have 38 Minisymposia (6 or 7 at a time), 12 sessions of Contributed Papers (6 at a time), and a Poster Session. However we have tried hard to keep conflicts to a minimum, and we have avoided pitting Minisymposia against Contributed Paper sessions.

I know you'll find this conference -- and your visit to Philadelphia -- exciting, stimulating, and enjoyable.
