An Information Infrastructure for Earthquake Science

Thomas H. Jordan and the SCEC/ITR Collaboration
Southern California Earthquake Center

The Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) is developing a new information infrastructure for earthquake science that uses advanced technologies in grid computing and knowledge representation and reasoning. SCEC’s goals have been formulated in terms of four computational pathways related to seismic hazard analysis, which include simulations of active fault-systems, rupture dynamics, and seismic wavefields. The overall goal is to create a SCEC "community modeling environment" or collaboratory that will comprise curated resources needed by researchers to develop and use these four computational pathways. The presentation will emphasize the increasing role of standardized ontologies in promoting interoperability.
