From Dislocations to Plasticity: The Role of Matched Asymptotic Expansions

2:15 PM-3:00 PM
Room: Liberty B&C
Chair: Patricia E. Bauman, Purdue University, USA

The goal of many studies of dislocations in elastic crystals is to put macroscopic models of plasticity on a firmer microscopic basis. Such a procedure can be carried out for the analogous system of macroscopic models of type-II superconductors, where the superconducting vortex takes the place of a line dislocation, and the plasticity model is the Bean critical-state model. The speaker will compare and contrast the models for dislocations and superconductors, highlighting the special difficulties presented by the underlying discrete nature of dislocation core.
