High Performance Computer System Design and the Cray X1

Steve Scott, Cray Inc.

At the end of 2002, Cray Inc. introduced the Cray X1, the first in a new series of computers that marries high bandwidth vector processor architecture with scalable MPP system architecture. This talk will provide an overview of the X1 computer and roadmap, and discuss some of the thinking and philosophy behind its design. We will also discuss some technology trends that impact computer system design and highlight several challenges for future HPC systems.
