Industrial Strength Optimization

Many industrial problems push the limits of existing optimization techniques and thus suggest areas where improved methods can have a large economic payoff. Two fields of optimization where this is the case are multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) and optimization involving expensive computer simulations. The speaker will focus on these emerging optimization fields and some industrial problems that motivated their study, for example, aeroelastic wing design, helicopter rotor blade design, and shot peen forming of wing skins. He will discuss some methods for handling these optimization problems and areas for further work. In particular he will discuss MDO problem decomposition strategies and optimization on inexpensive surrogate models of expensive analysis codes.
