Experience with Electronic Textbooks for Computational Science and Parallel Programming Education
Explosive progress has been made in building computational science and electronic educational tools in the past few years. The speaker will survey some of the major accomplishments such as the pioneering work of the Templates effort, and the Archetypes project. He will focus particular attention on the implications of technology trends (WWW, OpenDoc, WebRunner, and other emerging communication tools) for designing the software infrastructure of scientific computation.
It has been stated that the current work on electronic textbooks is nothing more than a mechanism for rapid publication of Latex drafts. The speaker will show that the potential for electronic publication can be far greater, provided that we embrace new ways of thinking about the process of application software design.
