Description

This course will give a direct entry to the theory and the applications of wavelets and filter banks. These are rapidly developing, and the basic ideas have reached a straightforward and coherent form from which to develop further - in theory and in real time. The techniques of filter banks (for discrete signals) and wavelets (to represent functions) are used throughout signal and image processing for compression, denoising, enhancement, motion estimation, and pattern recognition. New wavelets continue to be constructed for new applications. The instructors will present the theory, describe efficient implementation, and discuss applications, with audience participation.

Who Should Attend

Wavelets combine so many areas of pure and applied mathematics. This course will be useful and beneficial to engineers as well as mathematicians from industry, government laboratories and universities.

Recommended Background

The basic ideas of Fourier analysis and linear algebra.

Instructors

Gilbert Strang

has developed a new course at MIT on Wavelets and Filter Banks. He is SIAM's Vice-President for Education. He is the author of textbooks on linear algebra, and applied mathematics, and calculus. The course and also the workshops on wavelets are leading to a new text.

Björn Jawerth

has been involved in wavelet research for a number of years. His interests are both in the theoretical development of wavelets as well as their applications to numerical methods for partial differential equations, surface modeling and data compression. He is also Chief Technology Officer of Summus, Ltd., a company focusing on developing wavelet based products and algorithms.
