How does one effectively navigate today’s marketplace and changes in the world economy? How does one incorporate dreams, desires and reality into an occupation/career that really works? Planning is the answer. You will learn what should be a part of your thinking when choosing a career or new job. Location, money and time off are not all there is. Set yourself up for a strong finish by planning from the start. Here is what you need to know! 4:00-5:00 PM Interviewing Skills for Success Many applicants underestimate the importance of a carefully crafted resume. In most cases, the first impression a potential employer has of you will be your cover letter and resume. This short course on successful interviewing skills will give you tips on preparing a winning resume, navigating the interview process, how to dress for success, and how to recognize differing interview styles. Pointers will also be given on how to negotiate the best salary package. A ‘must attend’ for anyone motivated to advance their career. July 8-9, 2002	AWM Workshop The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) Workshop will be held July 8-9, 2002. The sessions in this workshop will showcase the research of female graduate students and postdoctoral mathematicians, and help individuals prepare for careers in the mathematical sciences. 6:30 PM-7:30 PM	Industry Panel: Opportunities for Mathematicians and Computational Scientists Kirk E. Jordan, SIAM's Vice President for Industry, is Emerging Solutions Executive, IBM Life Sciences Solutions, where he is involved in building research relationships between IBM Life Sciences and universities, particularly in the area of computational science. This panel discussion will include panelists from Merck Research Labs, Pacific Northwest National Lab, Physiome Sciences, United Technology Research Center. Each panelist will give an overview of their company and discuss what characteristics they would seek in a candidate with a math background applying to their company. Chair: Kirk Jordan IBM T.J. 7:00 PM-9:00 PM	Career Fair The SIAM Career Fair is an informational and interactive session at which employers and prospective employees can discuss careers. It is a great opportunity to meet government and industry representatives and discuss what they are looking for and what you have to offer. 8:00 PM-9:00 PM	Poetry Reading Philip Holmes will read from "Lighting the Steps," his most recent poetry collection (scheduled for publication in 2002 by Anvil Press Poetry Ltd, also the publisher of his three earlier volumes). Holmes is also one of the five plenary speakers on the program; his talk, "How Nonlinear Is Science? Reflections on a Chaotic, Dynamical Century," is scheduled for Thursday, July 11, at 2:00 PM.
8:30 PM -10:30 PM	Poster Session and Dessert Reception SIAM, AWM and Graduate Student poster displays will be presented in an informal setting, allowing presenters to discuss their research with individual attendees. All Day Event	Student Day The SIAM Education Committee is sponsoring a Student Day for the 2002 SIAM Annual meeting. The Student Day will provide the student members of SIAM the opportunity to attend presentations given by students. The presentations for Student Day will include lecturers given by the SIAM Student Paper Award winners, presentations from the SIAM winning team(s) for the MCM, presentations of the research projects of student representatives from SIAM University Chapters, and undergraduate students presenting papers in computational science and engineering. Block Community Lecture is open to the public, and is intended to encourage public appreciation of the excitement and vitality of science. The Community Lecture is named in honor of SIAM's longtime managing Director, one of SIAM's founders. The public is invited to the Community Reception afterwards.
