The meeting and conference will be held at the Spirit of Atlanta Hotel (soon to be Sheraton Atlanta Hotel) located in the heart of downtown Atlanta. The very name conjures up a dazzling array of sights and sounds. Atlanta hosted the l996 Summer Olympic Games and has achieved true international acclaim as a city filled with fun and exciting things to see such as dogwoods blooming at Atlanta's Botanical Gardens, the Fox Theatre, Margaret Mitchell's House, and an incredible blend of the romantic old south and modern shimmering skyscrapers. The Spirit of Atlanta Hotel located at the corner of Courtland and International Boulevard is convenient to Peachtree Center, Georgia World Congress Center, the Georgia Dome, and fabulous shopping at Underground Atlanta.


SIAM is holding a block of rooms at the Spirit of Atlanta Hotel (soon to be Sheraton Atlanta Hotel). These rooms are being held on a first-come, first-served basis at $107.00 single, $118.00 double occupancy. Rates are subject to prevailing state and local taxes, currently 14%. These rooms will be held for SIAM's use until Thursday, April 8, 1999.

Please be aware that SIAM's room block fills quickly so we suggest that you make your hotel and travel plans early. After Thursday, April 8, 1999, reservations at the SIAM price will depend upon availability. Fax or mail the Hotel Reservation Form directly to the Spirit of Atlanta Hotel . You may also make your reservation by phone (404-659-6500). Please be certain to mention that you are an attendee of the SIAM Conferences being held at the hotel during the week of May 9-15, 1999. Remember to get your confirmation number!


The hotel requires a deposit equivalent to one night's room rate plus 14% tax. The rates are $107 single or $118 double to guarantee your reservation. The hotel accepts American Express, MasterCard, Visa, money orders, or personal checks as forms of payment.

Hotel Room-Sharing List

A Hotel Room-Sharing List is available for those who wish to share a room with another attendee at the conference to reduce expenses. Please submit the Hotel Room-Sharing Form directly to SIAM.


If you need to change or cancel your reservation, you must contact the hotel by 4:00 PM eastern time, 48 hours prior to your scheduled arrival to receive a refund of one night's deposit. Remember to get a cancellation number from the reservations department.

Arrivals and Departures

Check-in time is 3:00 PM and check-out time is 12:00 noon.

Hotel Facilities

The hotel has a fitness center and an indoor/outdoor swimming pool and jacuzzi in a tropical setting with a fountain and gazebo. These facilities are complimentary to all SIAM conference attendees staying at the hotel. Hotel room conveniences include remote control television with cable channels, in-room touch tone telephone with voice mail, including one phone with a data port, alarm clock radio, and individual climate controls. Non-smoking rooms are available upon request.

Lunch Accommodations

The hotel has two meeting and eating facilities and is surrounded by many diverse selections of restaurants. The Hard Rock Cafe is just up the street. There are over 80 shops and restaurants in the Mall at Peachtree Center just two blocks away. What could be nicer than taking a walk during the lunch break on a lovely spring day in the south?


Parking is available at the hotel for $12.00 daily. All SIAM conference attendees staying at the hotel have in and out privileges on a 24-hour basis.

Visitor Information

Atlanta is a clean cosmopolitan city with a skyline rippling with domes and spires, glass and chrome, sparkle and shine. This high-rise and high-tech city is framed by soft green hills, rolling parkland, lush forest and dogwood trees. A dozen different cultures provide their own flavors within this city to stimulate the senses. For entertainment attractions, Atlanta offers CNN, the World of Coca-Cola, Civil War Ghosts at Georgia's Stone Mountain Park, Cyclorama and Kennesaw National Battlefield Park, Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, the African-American Panoramic Experience, and Jimmy Carter's Library and Museum. The weather in Atlanta in May is balmy and beautiful but can be unpredictable. In planning for your trip, please check your favorite weather channel or access prior to your departure. The evenings can be cool so definitely bring an all purpose jacket. Also, remember that meeting room temperatures and personal comfort zones vary widely. It is recommended that you bring a sweater or a jacket to the sessions.

Dining Opportunities

An information booth will be open listing some of the restaurants in Atlanta with a sign up sheet for people who might be interested in finding dinner companions. It will offer a gathering time and place for people to meet. It will also help with suggestions and directions to the restaurants.

E-Mail Access

UpdatedE-mail access will be in Conference Room 124, Mezzanine Level. Computers will be available to attendees for both conferences from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM Monday, May 10th through Friday May 14th. Computer access is generously provided by Georgia Institute of Technology School of Mathematics through the initiative of Jeff Geronimo and Ron Shenk.
