Accounting for Saturation in Nonlinear Control Design

2:00 PM-3:00 PM
Chair: Suzanne Lenhart, University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Room: Salon D

When designing controllers for nonlinear systems, one of the most prevalent and challenging nonlinearities to address is saturation, usually of the magnitudes and rates of the control inputs. A common approach is to do an initial design ignoring these nonlinearities and redesign with less ambitious performance goals. Such an iterative procedure may not converge to something satisfactory and it usually results in local performance degradation which, it turns out, is not a price that is necessary to pay. In this presentation, the speaker will describe a recently developed control synthesis method that accounts for system saturation without sacrificing local performance and will illustrate the main idea on several examples.
