The speaker will give an overview of research from the last fifteen years in which numerical methods for initial value problems have been formulated as dynamical systems. This work has led to both a clearer understanding of how to interpret data obtained from simulations of complicated dynamical systems and of how to construct algorithms which are robust over long time intervals.
He will describe work for both fixed time-step and adaptive algorithms. The latter pose particularly interesting challenges in the dynamical systems context since they lead naturally to discontinuous dynamical systems.
Throughout the talk the basic theory will be illustrated by the use of numerical experiments.
