Focus on Students

November 20, 2005

Engaging Young Mathematicians, a National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop held in Washington this summer, featured a talk on interdisciplinary research by James Keener. Addressing concerns about diminishing numbers of students in the math sciences, Keener, shown at right, suggested an increasing place for interdisciplinary research within math departments. At the request of SIAM News, he provided a written version of his talk. See this issue.

Students in the departments envisioned by Keener would have a lot in common with the students honored by SIAM in New Orleans this summer, at the 2005 SIAM Annual Meeting. Engaging talks by the three graduate students who received SIAM Student Paper Prizes, and by the two undergraduate teams named SIAM winners in this year's Mathematical Contest in Modeling, were highlights of the meeting. Student prize recipients who were able to attend the prize luncheon are pictured on page 20, along with two students honored for outstanding presentations at this year's MathFest.

Information about prizes and other SIAM programs for students can be found on the student page at the SIAM Web site (www.siam.org/students/).
