Outstanding Student Presentations at MathFest 2005

SIAM, under the auspices of its education committee, recognized two students for the excellence of the papers they presented at MathFest 2005, held August 4�6, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Judging the presentations at this year's MathFest were Richard Neal of the American Mathematical Society and Donald Miller (center), a professor at St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana, who represented the SIAM education committee. The winning student speakers were Andrew Harrell (left) of Texas A&M University, whose talk was titled "Error Analysis in Moore�Penrose Interpolation Methods," and John Gemmer of Millersville University of Pennsylvania, for a presentation titled "The General Brachistochrone Problem." MathFest 2006, the annual summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America, is scheduled for August 10�12, in Knoxville, Tennessee.
