SIAM Sessions at the 2000 Joint Mathematics Meetings

December 7, 1999

At the invitation of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America, SIAM has organized several sessions for this winter's Joint Mathematics Meetings, to be held in Washington, DC, January 19-22.

Alan Newell of the University of Arizona and the University of Warwick will give the SIAM Invited Address, "Natural Patterns," and the program also includes six SIAM minisymposia:

In addition to the SIAM-organized sessions, SIAM is represented on the program in several joint sessions with the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and other organizations. Some highlights: AMS-MAA-SIAM invited addresses will be given by Brian Greene of Columbia University ("Spacetime in String Theory"), Karl Rubin of Stanford University ("Ranks of Elliptic Curves"), and George C. Papanicolaou of Stanford ("Stochastic Differential Equations in Financial Mathematics: From Black-Scholes to the Present").

Judith Sunley of the National Science Foundation, representing AMS, MAA, SIAM, and the Mathematical Sciences Education Board, will also give a joint invited talk.

Finally, Margaret Wright of Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, because she had been selected by the Association for Women in Mathematics to give this year's Emmy Noether Lecture (her talk is titled "The Mathematics of Optimization"), was given the opportunity to organize a session for the meeting. The result is a two-part AMS-AWM-SIAM session on linear algebra and optimization, co-organized by Wright and Dianne O'Leary of the University of Maryland. Given the many outstanding women working in those areas, Wright says, they decided to have all the speakers be women. All nine of the women invited to participate have accepted, and O'Leary will also be giving a talk.

Another session of interest to many SIAM News readers is a workshop titled "Making the Most of the Job Search Process," organized by Thomas W. Rishel of Cornell University. David Levermore of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences is the program chair for SIAM's participation in the Joint Meetings.
