In recent years there have been remarkable developments in the theory of partial differential equations and in the calculus of variations motivated in part by the study of material stability and instability. Contemporary issues such as phase transitions and image segmentation in computer vision have challenged existing theories and they led to the introduction of new theoretical tools and innovative techniques. The speaker will address some of these developments in light of applications to the study of thin structures, fracture and damage, oscillations and concentrations.
