Time Delays in Physiological and Neural Systems

This minisymposium is co-sponsored by Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society/Société Canadienne de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles, and Society for Mathematical Biology, Inc.

2:00 PM-4:00 PM
Room: Sidney Smith 1087

Time delays conspicuously occur in physiological systems, and they are now recognized as important features to incorporate in a proper description of many systems. Their consideration has been invaluable in understanding the governing regulatory features. Problems include identifying the delays and accepting the need for their incorporation, and solutions are emerging as appropriate analytical and/or numerically-aided tools emerge for proper investigations. The speakers in this symposium will present four examples of models developed to describe physiological systems (two neural, one renal and one circulatory), in which the dynamical behaviors experimentally observed can only be understood by a careful consideration of the time delays involved in each system.
