Academic Memberships Offer Opportunities to Students
September 15, 1998Colleges and universities that are academic members of SIAM, and there are more than 300 of them to date, might not be taking full advantage of one of their membership benefits: the opportunity to nominate six students for complimentary student memberships in SIAM. Student members have the same privileges as regular members-they can take advantage of discounts on journal subscriptions, books, and meeting registration, in addition to receiving SIAM Review and SIAM News and to joining one activity group at no additional cost. Students who are interested in being nominated for these memberships should ask their advisers or department chairs for more information about this opportunity.
The engineering, mathematics, or physics departments of institutions that are departmental or academic members can also involve students in SIAM activities by organizing student chapters. Requirements for such organizations are simple: Each chapter must have at least 12 student members and one faculty member, who will sponsor the chapter and serve as its adviser; all must be SIAM members. All chapters must submit operational Rules of Procedure for approval by the Board of Trustees.
Chapter members determine for themselves the types of activities that they'll pursue; typical activities include: (1) the organization of seminars or symposia, (2) participation in SIAM section meetings; (3) tours of local industries; (4) social events for members and guests.
