Traditionally, the SIAM Annual meetings have not attracted chemical engineers. However, the practice of chemical engineering involves mathematics to a large extent. Perhaps one of the reasons for the lack of interest in SIAM has been the misconception that such meetings are meant for pure mathematicians. This symposium tries to address the problem by bringing together applied mathematicians both in chemical and the mathematics disciplines.
In this minisymposium, the speakers will review recent applications of mathematics in chemical engineering, such as process modeling, optimization, control, analysis, and separations.
Yuriko Renardy has been appointed, as of November 20, 1998, the SIAM representative for the applied mathematics section of the AIChE, with the purpose of forging long-term links between the AIChE and SIAM.
