Death of Gene Golub, 75

Gene Golub, founder of the NA Digest, passed away on Friday, November 16, at the Stanford University Hospital. He was 75 years old.

Gene Golub served as SIAM President from 1985-86, and on the SIAM Board of Trustees from 1982-84. Before that, he served on the SIAM Council from 1974-81. Gene founded two of SIAM's journals, the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing. He also initiated several of SIAM's prizes and numerous other activities. Gene was also instrumental in creating the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM), which just concluded its Congress in Zurich in July 2007. Most of all, Gene Golub was a friend and colleague to many within SIAM. His presence will be missed, but his indelible stamp on numerical analysis and scientific computing will remain.
