Registration is open for the expanded 2008 M3 Challenge!

November 21, 2007

Registration for Moody's Mega Math Challenge 2008 is now open! SIAM is also excited to announce, that after a wildly-successful two years in the tri-state New York City region, with participating and winning teams from comprehensive to gifted high schools, and all fielding competitive teams, the M3 Challenge is expanding!

SIAM is fortunate to have funding from The Moody's Foundation to increase the number of schools that are able to participate in this year's Challenge to include both metro Boston and Philadelphia and the surrounding counties; the M3 Challenge now reaches high school juniors and seniors from lower New Hampshire through Wilmington, DE! A compete list of eligible counties can be found at http://m3challenge.siam.org/rules/eligibility.php.

The Challenge spotlights applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool, as a viable and exciting profession, and as a vital contributor to advances in an increasingly technical society. Moody's Mega Math Challenge is entirely Internet-based and there are no entrance or participation fees. Each high school may enter up to two teams of three to five students each. Students choose which day they wish to work on Challenge weekend, March 8 and 9, and have 14 hours to solve an open-ended, realistic, applied math-modeling problem focused on real-world issues. Scholarship prizes total $65,000.

Moody's and SIAM are interested in improving the pipeline of young people studying and beginning careers in applied mathematics, and both encourage students to participate in the Challenge as an educational tool.

Complete details, sample problems and archives of previous winning teams and information on all Challenge events can be found at http://m3challenge.siam.org.

You can also register for e-alerts at http://m3challenge.siam.org/signup/ to be kept apprised of the progress of the Challenge.
