NSF Program to Advance Theory in Biology

November 27, 2007

The NSF announced a new version of a program, Advancing Theory in Biology. A mulitdisciplinary program in biology (under NSF/BIO) that promotes, among other aspects, mathematical or computational models in biology.

This program announcement is different than the previous version (released in April 2007). The most recent version reflects and references the recent National Research Council report (The Role of Theory in Advancing 21st Century Biology: Catalyzing Transformative Research; see http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=12026.)

Funding is $5 million in FY 2008 and again in FY 2009, with 10-15 awards made per year. The solicitation emphasizes that proposal reviewers will include non-biologists, but also that proposals to develop mathematical or computational models must be justified within the overarching goal of advancing basic biological theory.
