New SIAM Officers, Board and Council Members Elected

January 8, 2008

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) ensures the strongest interactions between mathematics and other scientific and technological communities through membership activities, publication of journals and books, and conferences. In doing this, SIAM calls on its membership to elect officers and representatives to govern SIAM activities and make important decisions on behalf of all members. Conducted electronically from September 19 through November 27, the 2007 election was held to fill the officer positions of President, Vice President at Large, and Secretary, three open seats on the SIAM Board of Trustees, and four open seats on the SIAM Council. The 2007 election results are as follows:

President: Douglas N. Arnold

Arnold is a professor in the School of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota, and is currently completing a seven-year term as Director of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) at the University of Minnesota. He has been a member of the SIAM Council since 2003 and has held numerous leadership positions throughout his 30-year association with SIAM. His term as president will run from 2009 until 2010. In 2008, Arnold will serve as president-elect and in 2011 as past president.

Vice President at Large: David E. Keyes

Keyes is the Fu Foundation Professor of Applied Mathematics at Columbia University and Acting Director of the Institute for Scientific Computing Research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He has been the Vice President at Large since 2006 and is the Faculty Advisor for Columbia's Student Chapter of SIAM.

Secretary: L. Pamela Cook

Cook is a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Associate Dean of Engineering, and holds a secondary appointment as Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware. She has been the Secretary of SIAM since 2006 and has been the Editor-in-Chief of SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics since 2002.

SIAM Board of Trustees: John G. Lewis; Jerrold E. Marsden; Stephen Wright.

John G. Lewis is a Senior Principal Engineer with Cray Inc., Affiliate Professor, Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, and a member of the Advisory Board for the UW CSE Access Computing Alliance. Lewis has been a member of the SIAM Board of Trustees since 2005 and served on the SIAM Council from 1997 until 2003.

Jerrold E. Marsden is the Carl F. Braun Professor of Engineering and Control and Dynamical Systems at the California Institute of Technology. He has been a member of the SIAM Board of Trustees since 2005 and is the scientific co-chair for ICIAM 2011.

Stephen Wright is a professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been a member of the SIAM Board of Trustees since 2005.

SIAM Council: Steven J. Cox; Margot Gerritsen; Mary Pugh; Mary Silber.

Steven J. Cox is an adjunct professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine and a professor in the Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics at Rice University.

Margot Gerritsen is an assistant professor in the Department of Energy Resources Engineering and Assistant Professor by courtesy in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. She is a member of the Steering Committee for the Institute for Computational Mathematics in Engineering and an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University.

Mary Pugh is an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Toronto. She has been a member of the SIAM Council since 2005 and is Associate Editor, SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems.

Mary Silber is a professor in the Department of Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics at Northwestern University. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, and is the SIAM representative to AMS-ASA-AWM-IMS-MAA-NCTM-SIAM Committee on Women in the Mathematical Sciences.

Petter E. Bjorstad will fill the remaining one year of the Board of Trustees seat vacated by Tony Chan. Bjorstad is a Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bergen, Norway and Research Director at the Bergen Center for Computational Science.

Timothy A. Davis will fill the remaining two years of the SIAM Council seat vacated by Douglas Arnold. Davis is a professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) at the University of Florida.

The newly-elected officers and members of the Council and Board of Trustees will continue in the tradition of strong and enthusiastic leadership since SIAM's founding in 1952.

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) is an international community of over 11,000 individual members, including applied and computational mathematicians, computer scientists, and other scientists and engineers. SIAM advances the fields of applied mathematics and computational science by publishing a series of premier journals and a variety of books, and conducting conferences on a wide variety of topics.
