IMU announces Citation Statistics report

June 12, 2008

On Wednesday, June 11, the International Mathematical Union (IMU) released the latest Citation Statistics report and announced findings on the use of citations in assessing scientific research from a mathematical perspective. The report was co-sponsored by the International Council on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS).

Drawing upon broad use of citation data to evaluate research based on numbers such as impact factors and h-indices, the report cautions against the over-reliance on citation statistics, stating that these statistics are often misleading when misunderstood or misused, and can be subjective, simplistic, and their perspective on research quality limited and incomplete.

The research was based on practices reported by mathematicians and other scientific researchers from around the world.
