Two University at Buffalo students win SIAM/MCM Award

Two University at Buffalo (UB) graduate students were awarded multiple prizes in the international 2008 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). The winning UB team of Amy Evans, from Rome, NY and Tracy Stepien, from Camillus, NY, was one of nine teams to be selected for an Outstanding Winner award; they were also awarded the Ben Fusaro Award, named for the founder of the contest and long-time SIAM member. In addition, the UB team won the SIAM prize, which is awarded to one outstanding winner for "noteworthy originality and creativity in their modeling effort."
Teams competing in the MCM were asked to develop a model that described how the coast of Florida would be affected by the melting of the polar ice caps due to predicted increases in global temperatures. The students were given 96 hours to model changes in the Florida coastline every decade for the next 50 years, with particular attention to large, metropolitan areas.
Evans and Stepien will present their paper at the 2008 SIAM Annual Meeting in San Diego in July.
