DARPA Advertises Young Faculty Awards

DARPA has announced the Young Faculty Award solicitation, an early career award for researchers in selected fields of interest to DoD. Among the covered topics is mathematics, a program within the Defense Sciences Office. The deadline for application is February 16, 2009.
� Program Goals: The program funds junior faculty and exposes them to Department of Defense (DOD) needs and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) program development process in order to allow them to develop their research ideas in the context of DOD needs.
� Eligibility: Participation is limited to untenured Assistant or Associate Professors within 6 years of appointment to a tenure-track position at a U.S. institution of higher learning. The ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance is required.
� Topic areas: Quantum Science and Technology; Bio-Info-Micro; Mathematics; Structural Materials; Functional Materials; Power and Energy; Micro/Nano-electronics; MEMS/NEMS; Photonics; Lasers; Manufacturing Science and Technology; and Neuroscience.
� More about the Mathematics Topic Area: DARPA is interested in both fundamental mathematical research to build the foundation for advanced science and technology programs and in applied mathematics and computational mathematics to achieve cutting-edge technical superiority. Areas of interest include but are not limited to: algorithms; geometric and topological methods; inverse methods; multiresolution analysis; and computation that can be applied to design and control complex systems, extract knowledge from data, forecast and assess risk, and perform efficient computations. Potential applications include interdisciplinary efforts that illuminate the mathematical aspects of the other core technologies listed in this announcement.
� Funding and Due Dates: The maximum award size is $300,000 over 24 months. Grant recipients will also have the opportunity to participate in a number of visits/exercises at a variety of military sites and facilities. Proposals are due February 16, 2009.
