Henry Wolkowicz re-elected SIAM Council Member-at-Large
January 8, 2009Henry Wolkowicz of the University of Waterloo has been re-elected by the membership of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) to continue serving the SIAM Council as a Council Member-at-Large through 2011. Wolkowicz's goals as a council member include continuing to support and foster research in applied and computational mathematics while at the same time utilizing advances in technology and distribution methods.
"SIAM should give emphasis to facilitating the dissemination and collaboration of research," said Wolkowicz. "Maintaining the high quality of conferences, journals, and books is also a priority. SIAM should continue to be a leader in combining the advances in user interfaces and electronic communication together with the increase in experimental mathematics."
He is a professor in the department of combinatorics and optimization at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. In addition to his position with SIAM, Wolkowicz is also a member of the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS), the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS), the Mathematical Programming Society (MPS), and the SIAM Activity Group on Optimization.
He received his Ph.D. in mathematics, his M.Sc. in applied mathematics, and his B.Sc. in mathematics, from McGill University in Montreal. Wolkowicz's research interests include optimization, mathematical programming, semidefinite programming, numerical analysis, convex analysis, matrix theory, and generalized inverses.
Each year SIAM relies on its members to elect its leadership; representatives to the Council and Board of Trustees are elected to three-year terms. Those selected govern SIAM activities and make important decisions on behalf of all members.
