Bruce Hendrickson elected SIAM Council Member-at-Large

January 8, 2009

Bruce Hendrickson of Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico has been elected by the membership of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) as the newest member of the SIAM Council, serving as a Council Member-at-Large through 2011. Hendrickson's goals as a council member include facilitating the interactions between math and its applications and continuing to advance the fields of applied mathematics and computational science.

"We are entering a golden age for applied math and for SIAM," said Hendrickson. "Applied mathematics is central to an ever expanding set of scientific and social challenges, and SIAM is at the crossroads of all this activity. Mathematical advances are needed to address many of the pressing challenges of our era including predicting climate change, evaluating alternative energy technologies, managing vast quantities of information, and optimizing public health. These and many other problems will require research that crosses traditional mathematical boundaries and bridges between math and applications. SIAM is uniquely positioned to facilitate these interactions and to enable these advances. SIAM's contributions to education, outreach, networking, and advocacy are all central to the health of the mathematical community and its ability to impact the larger world."

Hendrickson is currently senior manager for computer science and mathematics at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque and affiliated professor in the department of computer science at the University of New Mexico. In addition to his new position with SIAM, he is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the ACM Special Interest Group on Algorithms and Computation Theory, the IEEE Computer Society, the SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering, the SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra, and the SIAM Activity Group on Supercomputing.

Hendrickson received his Ph.D. in computer science from Cornell University, and his M.S. in physics and B.S. in mathematics from Brown University. His research interests include combinatorial scientific computing, linear algebra and preconditioning, parallel algorithms, graph theory, and data mining.

Each year SIAM relies on its members to elect its leadership; representatives to the Council and Board of Trustees are elected to three-year terms. Those selected govern SIAM activities and make important decisions on behalf of all members.
