Thomas Yizhao Hou elected SIAM Council Member-at-Large

January 8, 2009

California Institute for Technology's Thomas Yizhao Hou has been elected by the membership of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) as the newest member of the SIAM Council, serving as a Council Member-at-Large through 2011. Hou's goals as a council member include cultivating and growing SIAM's international membership and stature.

"SIAM has become a highly international professional society," said Hou. "Through its outstanding publications, excellent conferences, and inclusive policies, SIAM is an essential part of the lives and careers of its members worldwide. The opportunities are enormous and the reward for SIAM and the applied mathematics community can be tremendous. As a world premier society in applied mathematics, SIAM can have an even more important role in international efforts."

Hou also notes the opportunities for SIAM to play a greater role in mathematics in industry. "There are now tremendous opportunities for mathematicians to make important contributions to the applied sciences in industry. SIAM must continue to take a leadership role in these efforts. As industry becomes increasingly aware of the importance of applied mathematics in technology innovation, it is now one of the main sources of employment opportunities for applied math students."

Hou is the Charles Lee Powell Professor of applied and computational mathematics, professor of applied and computational mathematics, and association director of the Center for Integrative Multiscale Modeling and Simulation, at Caltech. In addition to his new position with SIAM, Hou is a member of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of Multiscale Modeling and Simulation: A SIAM Interdisciplinary Journal.

Hou received his Ph.D. and M.S. in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his B.S. in mathematics from the South China University of Technology. His research interests include multiscale analysis and computation, vortex dynamics, free boundary problems, multi-phase flows, flow and transport in strongly heterogeneous porous media, and global regularity of 3-D incomprehensible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations.

Each year SIAM relies on its members to elect its leadership; representatives to the Council and Board of Trustees are elected to three-year terms. Those selected govern SIAM activities and make important decisions on behalf of all members.
